The Biofertilizer Market is expected to reach $4.03 billion by 2031 from an estimated $1.86 billion in 2024, at a CAGR of 11.7% during the forecast period from 2024 to 2031.

The global demand for food is rising rapidly, pushing growers to increase crop production. However, the increasing reliance on synthetic fertilizers has led to the degradation of soil quality and diminished the nutritional value of agricultural produce. As a result, biofertilizers, which play a pivotal role in organic farming, are gaining traction as a sustainable alternative. Intensive agricultural practices, while boosting crop yields, have caused soil fatigue and deteriorated soil health, making the case for organic farming methods even stronger.

Governments worldwide are stepping in with initiatives aimed at conserving soil health and promoting sustainable farming practices. These efforts focus on reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and increasing the adoption of biofertilizers, which are biological and organic in nature. This global shift towards biofertilizers is driven by the need to enhance crop production without compromising the environment.

India’s Government-Led Biofertilizer Initiatives

In India, the government is taking strong measures to encourage biofertilizer usage. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, along with the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and the Ministry of Science and Technology, have been actively promoting the research, development, and commercialization of biofertilizers and biopesticides. To support organic farming, the Government of India provides financial incentives, including subsidies for new biofertilizer and biopesticide production units. A grant of INR 4.5 million is allocated for building biocontrol laboratories, and INR 2 million is set aside for procuring equipment to produce biofertilizers. In addition, the Central Government’s policy think tank, NITI Aayog, also supports the use of biofertilizers and organic fertilizers to reduce dependence on synthetic inputs and improve soil health.

China’s “Zero Growth on Chemical Fertilizer” Campaign

China, too, has recognized the adverse effects of chemical fertilizers and pesticides on the environment. The country’s “Zero Growth on Chemical Fertilizer and Pesticide by 2020” initiative was launched to curb the overuse of synthetic inputs in agriculture. In a collaborative effort with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), China has adapted its registration processes to encourage the use of biofertilizers, reflecting its commitment to environmental sustainability.

U.S. Government Support for Organic Farming

The U.S. government remains a strong advocate for organic agriculture. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has implemented the National Organic Programme (NOP) to foster organic food processing and establish national and international standards for organic production. Additionally, the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) contributes to organic agriculture through research, education, and extension services, helping organic producers develop sustainable management strategies. Financial assistance programs, such as the Organic Transitions (ORG) and the Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative (OREI), further support the U.S. organic sector, contributing to the growing demand for biofertilizers.

Italy’s New Law Supports Organic Agriculture

In Europe, Italy has taken a significant step by passing a new law in 2022 that introduces the “Organic Made in Italy” label. The legislation aims to strengthen Italy’s organic agriculture sector both domestically and internationally. This law is part of a broader national strategy that seeks to promote environmental sustainability, enhance organic supply chains, and reduce the environmental impact of non-productive sectors. These efforts are expected to accelerate the demand for biofertilizers in Italy as the country positions itself as a leader in organic farming.

The Global Shift to Organic Agriculture

As more countries recognize the environmental and health risks associated with chemical fertilizers—such as pest resistance, secondary pest outbreaks, and the presence of chemical residues in food, soil, and water—governments are amending their agricultural policies. These reforms aim to reduce chemical inputs, promote organic farming, and encourage the widespread adoption of biofertilizers.
