Dialysis Market by Product (Haemodialysis [Dialyzers, Bloodlines, Dialysates {Alkaline, Acidic}, CVC, AV Fistula, AV Graft] Peritoneal Dialysis [Conventional, Nocturnal]), End User (Hospital, Homecare, Dialysis Center) – Global Forecast to 2031
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) can be caused by several factors, including diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, and obesity. End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), an advanced stage of CKD, results in the irreversible loss of kidney function, necessitating regular dialysis or kidney transplantation for survival. Diabetes and high blood pressure are the leading causes of CKD, accounting for 75% of kidney failure cases worldwide between 2015 and 2017.
Among new ESRD patients, 47% were primarily diagnosed with diabetes, the top cause of ESRD, while 29% were diagnosed with hypertension, the second leading cause. Other contributors to ESRD include glomerulonephritis (kidney filtering unit damage), inherited conditions like polycystic kidney disease, developmental malformations, immune disorders such as lupus, obstructions like kidney stones or enlarged prostates, and recurrent urinary tract infections.
Globally, the number of patients receiving treatment for kidney failure is projected to rise from 2.6 million in 2010 to 5.4 million by 2030. Furthermore, as per World Population Prospects, by 2050, nearly all regions will have at least a quarter of their population aged 60 and above. With CKD having a global prevalence of around 13%, and its incidence increasing with age, the demand for ESRD treatment is growing. Since kidney transplantation faces challenges like organ shortages and long waiting lists, dialysis remains the most accessible treatment option, leading to a rise in dialysis centers to meet the increasing patient demand.

Advances in dialysis center planning are supported by public data networks that track nearly every dialysis patient nationwide. As of 2019, there were about 45,600 dialysis centers worldwide, treating an average of 75 patients per center, although this varies by country.
In Malaysia, subsidized dialysis services are available in public hospitals, leading to the growth of stand-alone dialysis centers from 205 in 2000 to 758 in 2014. Similarly, Fresenius Medical Care partnered with Sri Ramakrishna Hospital in India to open a new dialysis center, with India’s stand-alone HD centers rising from 50 in 2008 to 89 by 2012. Brazil also saw a 37.8% increase in dialysis centers from 550 in 2002 to 781 in 2018, predominantly in private centers.
The growth in dialysis centers is driving demand for dialysis machines, dialyzers, and other consumables, which is expected to propel the hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis market at a CAGR of 4.4%, reaching $17.69 billion by 2027, according to Meticulous Research®.
