The postbiotics market is expected to reach $24 million by 2029, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.1% from 2022 to 2029.

In the Asia-Pacific region, consumers are becoming increasingly health-conscious, a trend accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Many feel that their overall health has deteriorated in recent years, prompting a growing demand for health-boosting and nutritious products like postbiotics. This shift is partly driven by concerns over aging populations and the negative effects of modern lifestyles and diets.

Additionally, the prevalence of gastrointestinal diseases, such as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis, has risen significantly across the region. According to BMC Gastroenterology, the number of IBD cases in Asia-Pacific increased from 89,447 in 2017 to 105,000 in 2020, with projections expecting that number to rise to 183,000 by 2035. Countries like South Korea, Japan, and China have seen a surge in these conditions due to modernization, increased adoption of Western diets, and widespread antibiotic use.

In China, there is a growing awareness of postbiotics, accompanied by increased product development in the sector. For example, in May 2021, Lactobio A/S partnered with Vland Biotech Group to introduce the postbiotic LB356R acne product in China. With consumers in the country becoming less price-sensitive and more inclined to purchase branded health products, China is expected to be a booming market for postbiotic-based acne treatments. Moreover, the health supplements market in China grew from approximately RMB 128 billion in 2015 to around RMB 271 billion in 2021. Taiwanese firm Chambio is expected to tap into this market by launching oral care, weight management, and immune health products containing heat-killed postbiotics.

Japan, too, is a key player in the postbiotic market, especially given its aging population. Postbiotic supplements and functional foods and beverages are becoming increasingly popular. Japan offers postbiotics both as food products and pharmaceuticals. For instance, in 2018, Morinaga Milk Industry received approval for its Lactobacillus paracasei MCC1849-based LAC-Shield product. In 2021, House Wellness Foods launched a range of products incorporating heat-killed L-137, including yogurt-flavored drinks, energy gel packs, and soluble powders for beverages and soups.
