The global Disinfection Robots Market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 19.6% from 2024 to 2031, reaching $4.09 billion by 2031.

Disinfection robots can autonomously sanitize the air and surfaces in hospital environments, significantly reducing the time and resources required for disinfection while minimizing occupational exposure risks for healthcare personnel. These mobile robots can navigate independently or with operator assistance and are designed to prevent the spread of various pathogens.

Preventing and controlling hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) is essential for improving healthcare quality. Traditional hospital cleaning and disinfection methods, such as manual wiping, chemical spraying, and ultraviolet irradiation, can be challenging to assess for effectiveness. Additionally, some chemical disinfectants may cause severe irritation and occupational injuries.

Intelligent robots have become increasingly important in performing environmental disinfection at the source of infection. These robots reduce labor costs and enhance disinfection efficiency while lowering occupational exposure.

Disinfection robots are designed to sanitize surfaces using ultraviolet (UV) radiation, disinfectant sprays, or a combination of both. UV light disinfection robots emit UV-C light onto predefined infectious hotspots, disinfecting and eliminating bacteria and viruses on exposed surfaces. Disinfectant spraying robots are equipped with a nozzle that sprays chemical disinfectants, such as peroxyacetic acid, chlorine dioxide, or hydrogen peroxide. Some of these robots have self-navigation capabilities, while others can be operated remotely. Disinfection robots are widely used in healthcare facilities, public transportation, and other public spaces.

Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs), also known as nosocomial infections, are diseases acquired in hospitals or healthcare facilities that manifest 48 hours or more after admission or within 30 days of discharge. Pathogens that cause HAIs include viruses, bacteria, and fungi. Bloodstream infections (BSIs), pneumonia, urinary tract infections (UTIs), and surgical site infections (SSIs) are among the most prevalent. These infections not only threaten patients’ health and lives but also prolong hospital stays, increasing the economic burden.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), around 1.7 million patients contract hospital-acquired infections every year. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that out of every 100 hospitalized patients globally, seven in developed countries and ten in developing countries are at risk of acquiring at least one healthcare-associated infection.

A similar trend is observed in Europe. According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, approximately 3.1–4.6 million people in acute care hospitals in EU countries are at risk of acquiring healthcare-associated infections each year. An article published in the StatPearls journal in 2021 indicates that healthcare-associated infections affect about 3.2% of all hospitalized patients in the U.S. and about 6.5% in Europe.

The global prevalence of HAIs is likely much higher due to the lack of surveillance systems. To reduce HAIs and improve patient care, thorough terminal cleaning of patient rooms in healthcare facilities is necessary. This growing need to reduce HAIs has led to increasing demand for disinfection robots in healthcare facilities.
