In-process controls during tablet production should also include the dimensions (thickness, diameter), uniformity of mass, hardness and/or crushing force, friability, disintegration or dissolution rate (for example, for modified-release tablets) of the finished dosage form.
The idea of automation has replaced traditional approach in which labour-intensive methods were used that resulted in the increase of manufacturing lead time and production cost. The formulation of solid oral dosage forms, and tablets in particular, has undergone rapid change and development over the last several decades with the emergence of pre-compression, high-speed and ultra high-speed presses with induced die feeding, automated weight-control systems, new direct compression materials, and upper punch tightness on tablet presses. Some of the newer tablet presses have tablet rejection systems that are operated by a computer. Computer-controlled tablet presses only require an operator to set up the press at the proper tablet weight and thickness (or pressure). The computer can then assume complete control of the run.
